Emmis Communication’s Digital Department is looking for a high energy, enthusiastic web developer / web designer. Emmis Digital creates innovative web-based solutions for their clients. They create websites,
web-based applications, e-marketing and digital products. They focus on creating positive user experiences and we help organizations leverage technology to meet business goals.

Emmis has an immediate need for a Web Developer / Designer in Indianapolis, Indiana. This position will work within a digital team of developers, designers, content producers, and videographers. S/he will be expected to produce highly creative and interactive web solutions for a variety of clients.

The ideal candidate will work throughout the entire lifecycle of the development project including discovery of functional requirements, interaction design, visual experience, and development using interactive technologies such as Adobe Flash, AJAX, CSS, and JavaScript.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

Be able to work closely with a team of designers, developers, videographers, and content managers building web sites and multimedia projects.

Showcase a high proficiency of design and skill in developing content using interactive technologies such as Flash, CSS/JavaScript

Manage projects from concept to design to delivery.

Work with staff to build mockup.

Collaborate with internal teams, partners, and clients on creative ideas for new features, content and enhancements that advance their business objectives.

Stay knowledgeable to relevant, current technology trends and share this knowledge with fellow team members.

Communicate with Project Managers on the development status of tasks according to established standards.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

Bachelor’s degree preferred with minimum of 3 years of relatedexperience in internet design and development.

Working knowledge of the Adobe suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver) as well as desktop publishing/imaging applications for creation, production and manipulation of graphics on the web.

Knowledge of Flash animation techniques using the timeline and programmatic motion as well as an understanding of ActionScript programming. Additional Flash knowledge is a plus including integrating Flash video into Flash applications; creating dynamic Flash applications that use server side
technologies; external Resource Integration (audio, video and other media)

Expertise in current Internet standards, including web browsers and compliance issues.

Strong understanding of current web markup or scripting languages: HTML, XHTML, XML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Understanding of dynamic or active web content and the use of classic ASP, ASP.NET, and SQL.

Experience and understanding of site architecture and user experience.

Strong attention to detail with excellent time management and organizational skills.

Strong oral communication skills.

Deliver high-quality work products in a timely manner and meet established deadlines.

Survey of Internet Browsers

There are a variety of different browsers out there on the internet, but certain ones work for certain people. The only ones I am familiar with are Internet Explorer, Netscape and Mozilla Firefox.

I started off with Internet Explorer which I’m sure everyone did. It has a nice clean 2.0 look to it, very inviting, but it also has too many problems. Every few minutes it seems like it will crash and tell you to send a report, but the report doesn’t do anything because it continues to happen. It will tell you about updates, but those don’t help either because it continues to do the same thing no matter what you do to try to help it out. The only thing good IE has is the ability to have certain HTML coding show up a certain way. I remember I kept having issues with IE and didn’t want to switch because I was able to see my color coded scrollbars when I designed my layouts for different sites, etc.

After years of crashing I finally got fed up and went to Firefox. People kept telling me about it but I never wanted to try it because I wasn’t able to see any change to the scrollbars, among other things. I was basically forced to start using it and found that it ran quicker, had a lot of add ons, and was more up to date. Now I will not use anything else except that. I can’t remember the last time I used an IE browser.

Netscape was a temporary gateway between IE and me going to Firefox. It had to be one of the worst browsers ever made. Any others I don’t know much about at all because I haven’t tried them. Firefox is here to stay on all of my computers.

Design, Usability, & Accessibility

I have been on both ends of the design spectrum, print and web. It’s different in many ways but sort of the same in others. Design is just design, you design with the same programs, possibly, in different ways to either have it to be printed, or have it set up on the internet. This is when dpi comes into play and how clear and crisp the design has to be for each one.

Design is not the same as usability. Design is how it’s designed for you to SEE, and usability is how the site is set up to work and function. They aren’t the same, but they do go hand in hand.

Accessibility should also come into play when talking about design and usability. Handicapped users deserve to have the same access if not easier, when they are browsing a website. Especially if they are using one where they would need to shop because they can’t get out the house or have no one to do most normal things for them.

Basically when it comes down to a website, you want your visitors to have an enjoyable experience, not frustrating. Everything they need should be able to be found in a quick manner and user friendly.

Designing With Color

Colors can affect certain aspects of people’s lives. They also are used as metaphors. Lighter blues can be very serene where as darker blues can make you feel gloomy. Yellow is another color that can be used for peace and serenity, where as a bright, dark yellow can draw your eye straight to it in a warning sense. Red of course, is used for anger, or love, purple, would be used for royalty. Black could be used for death, etc. Certain colors put together the correct way can also be interpreted for certain things and are visually appealing. For example, certain dark reds, tans and beige would represent dining and food. Red and green, Christmas. Green and gold are usually school colors. Some colors can also mean bad things, such as red and black, would represent a gang, blue and black would be their rivals. If you wear certain colors in certain areas, you’re liable to get your head blown off just for walking by, and you probably would have never known. In short, make sure your colors along with your design are pleasing to the eye. It’s nothing worse than going to a website with a green background with orange text and a sky blue stroke around it. Use certain websites such as colourlovers.com and match up certain palettes and see what you can come up with that looks nice and will have your readers want to come back for more.

Typography On The Web

I am proud of the way typography on the web has spread in the past few years. I remember just getting online, looking at the same boring fonts, making the web pages look all the same and super boring. Now that everything has changed, more sites have come to life and look a lot better! It actually looks like people are taking the time out to personalize the sites how they would like, instead of them all with the same boring times new roman font. Different, big bold and script colored fonts bring excitement to all web pages, and makes it more enjoyable to look at. The only issue with that is if that person doesn’t have that certain font on their computer. Then they wouldn’t be able to see it. Computers should be programmed with them all, so that users can get the full experience. Another thing that can mess up a design is if the typography is off. People need to understand typography can make or break your project. If you’re doing something for a upscale party, you wouldn’t use a western font, etc. Typography takes time to understand and learn but is rewarding in the end result.

Art Direction

Still not really sure what art direction means, but the way that I’m catching is just basically designing your site to tailor your needs but at the same time not make it boring. You only get one chance to impress someone and with the world today, websites are just as important as a resume. If you have a bad site, who’s going to remember it? The problem though with this art directing is that people want these fancy websites, but don’t want to pay the fancy money. I don’t think it will ever be very popular because not many people have the time or patience to put together a site that someone will remember. As far as the 6 segments, I don’t really agree, true you have to use space wisely when designing, but breaking it down into 6 segments won’t really work for everything. Viewpoints in a website are important because as always my teacher says you need to be able to design the site for no matter who is looking at it, whether on a PC or a phone. Some phones have a web version that I don’t get but anyway, art direction is a good thing and hopefully it will get more prominent in the future.

I am a big fan of the 2.0 style so I chose this one first. This one caught my eye because of the black and the lime color made it pop. The layout style is very nice and pro, it would be something I would probably use for a club or some business of the sort. The step by step is great, and it looks easy to do. It would be simple to put my own twist to this. The only thing I didn’t like was his choice of text for the header, it is boring and needs to stand out much more than it does.

Anyone who knows me also knows I love bright colors so this one drew me in. The set up is very nice, I’d have probably put a few boxes around the layout to separate everything because it looks like a big canvas with stuff thrown on it. I like the fun tropical look. I did a layout like that before in Web Design I almost. I’m not a big fan on how the directions were laid out, but it was decent.

I thought this one was pretty decent, minus the flower. I like the grunge look to it. I don’t like the green box going across the bar too much though. The instructions are pretty clear. Some good things could come out of this layout. I would use it for something classy, maybe a site to advertise photography or something like that.

History of the Internet

The Internet was designed in part to provide a communications network that would work even if some of the sites were destroyed by nuclear attack. If the most direct route was not available, routers would direct traffic around the network via alternate routes.

The early Internet was used by computer experts, engineers, scientists, and librarians. There was nothing friendly about it. There were no home or office personal computers in those days, and anyone who used it, whether a computer professional or an engineer or scientist or librarian, had to learn to use a very complex system.

Since the Internet was initially funded by the government, it was originally limited to research, education, and government uses. Commercial uses were prohibited unless they directly served the goals of research and education. This policy continued until the early 90′s, when independent commercial networks began to grow.

As the Internet has become ubiquitous, faster, and increasingly accessible to non-technical communities, social networking and collaborative services have grown rapidly, enabling people to communicate and share interests in many more ways. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and many more let people of all ages rapidly share their interests of the moment with others everywhere.

I’ve been in and out of Graphics for 8 years now. I’m self taught mostly, I went to another college in Iowa in 2001 majoring in Graphic Communications. Life happened, and I had to leave and work to take care of my children. I ended up going back to school later and graduating as a Medical Administrative Assistant. I started at Ivy Tech a year and a half ago as a RN major, didn’t do well on the test and decided to come here to finish up my Web Degree. So really I love to do Graphics/Web Design and at the same time I love the Medical world, and I feel the need to have both under my belt.

I’m pretty sure there are many tools on the internet to help with Web Design, such as youtube.com and various forums (which I mod one of them and am a member of others), but it’s not the same as learning from a classroom in my opinion. I learned a lot of things from the internet and have been doing them a certain way for years just to find that there are other ways to do it nowadays and trying to do it the old way and learn it the new way crosses my wires. I do believe you should join a social networking community if you’re looking to find people who are interested in the same thing you are. It’s just a matter of them wanting to help you out or not. There are a lot of people who want to keep information to themselves so that you don’t pass them up or take what they have. That’s what will be my challenge with this class being online. It’s hard because you can’t get the face to face help that you need, but I will hope for the best.

Other than that, my career goals will be to finish this degree once and for all which is hopefully May 2010, and once I’m done with that, I would like to go to Purdue and finish Nursing, so that one day I can make the business that I own grow prosperously, and if I can’t I’d love to design for a big company, and also be head Nurse in the Emergency Room of a hospital, maybe back home in Chicago.
